Swine Flu is here! Being over 65 can be a good thing with Novel H1N1!

Did it ever really go way?  No seems to be the answer to that.  Information on the Novel H1N1 virus is “further study has shown that this new virus is very different from what normally circulates in North American pigs. It has two genes from flu viruses that normally circulate in pigs in Europe and Asia and bird (avian) genes and human genes.  Scientists call this a "quadruple reassortant" virus.”

The CDC report continues, “Most people who have become ill with this new virus have recovered without requiring medical treatment.” This from a released report CDC that also state that the “CDC routinely works with states to collect, compile and analyze information about influenza, and has done the same for the new H1N1 virus since the beginning of the outbreak.”

The CDC is also reporting that seasonal flu usually brings about 36,000 deaths each year in the US, with most of those deaths being in the population over 65 years old as well as in the under 5 years old range.  However, with the Novel H1N1, the CDC has found “The information analyzed by CDC supports the conclusion that novel H1N1 flu has caused greater disease burden in people younger than 25 years of age than older people. At this time, there are few cases and few deaths reported in people older than 64 years old, which is unusual when compared with seasonal flu." For current information visit the CDC site.

So what are we to do?
1.Wash Hands frequently with soap and warm water for 15 to 20 seconds.  Dry hands well and dispose properly of any towels.  If soap and water are not available, use one of the alcohol-based hand cleaners.

2.Cough or sneeze into tissues then dispose of tissues in trash can.

3.Be prepared with an emergency kit at home in case you do come down with flu like symptoms.  Have food, over the counter medications for coughs and sore throats, tissues and other things that might make your stay at home more pleasant.  Having the emergency kit will keep you home and out of the public after you begin feeling sick!  You can be infectious from 1 day prior to feeling sick and up to 5 to 7 days after.  So stay home!  Unless your symptoms need medical attention.

4.Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth as germs are spread this way.

5.Stay home at least 24 hours after fever is normal without using fever reducing medications! We don’t want the Novel H1N1 either!
